FINISHED!!!!!

So it has been a few days now since the program ended.

I am really happy that I made it through to the end.
There were a few times at the start when I doubted that I would get
through the whole 90 days.  But I did it!!!!

So what have I achieved?

·
Weight
done for 85kg to 79kg.  Weight loss
wasn't an objective of mine but I have been amazed how much weight I was
carrying.  Particularly around my
gut.  I feel lighter and stronger.

·
Down
three belt notches. All my suit pants are in need to some tailoring.

·
Related
point but my flabby middle has gone.

·
Concentration
and stress management has improved tremendously. It is hard to quantify but I
have noticed a real and significant difference. When attention starts to wander
I realise it is because I haven't eaten. Now a snack of fruit sets me right.

·
More
muscle on chest, arms and back.  Much
better tone as well.

·
As
mentioned on an earlier blog, my blood glucose is back into the normal range,
as is my cholesterol measurements. A potential long term, life changing
improvement

·
I
have broken the back of the regular drinking thing. I had about a 95% adherence
to the no booze rules.  This makes a big
difference to my day to day effectiveness and also to my long term health

·
I
think I missed only one or two exercise days, due to travel problems.

·
I
can now do pull ups!

·
Ninety
second planks are still a hurdle.

·
I
have a much better appreciation for food.
Food is fuel and medicine.  It can
also taste quite nice.  I now like
vegetables much more than I would have thought possible.  I am more aware of portion size and also the appropriateness
of when to eat and what type.  Snacks (as
mentioned) aren’t going to be what ever I want.
I will think more about what goes in.

·
Body
fat went from 19% down to 13% (depending on what scales you use).  What ever it mightbe I can see that I am
carrying much less fat and I can feel it through the day.

·
Also,
a new habit of not drinking calories.
Water for me!!

·
I
am going to be much better at exercising when travelling and also exercising at
home.  So easy with the bands and the
skipping rope.

·
Did
I mention that I am now a super skipper.

So,
it has been a great program.  There has
been times when I have been well and truly over it.  I limped across the finish line with my sore
back but even that won’t affect me as I have been 98% right for exercise, 93%
for booze avoidance, probably 95% for food.
A great result.  I am also now
delighted to know that I have the mental fortitude for stick at something this
complicated and demanding for 90 days.

I
really want to thank Patrick for such a great program.  It was really well put together and run.  Nice job.

However,
the real hero here is my wife who put up with me whining about no booze, eating
weird things, making a mess with my fruit salad, and with my vege salad.  For talking incessantly about the program (so
interesting for one of us!) and for dealing with the dreaded egg shell
fragements.  She had to overcome the
sneaking feeling that I was signing up to some cult.  I couldn’t have done it without her
support!!!

So
roll on the next 90 and the next 90 and the one after.  Maybe not as intense as the last 90 but certainly
much more aware and carrying a whole new library of habits and attitudes.

Thank
you and goodnight.

day 89

back pain is still there which has denied me the pleasure of the last few days of exercise.  However, I am keen to enjoy the pain, so in a few days i will give them a whirl, just to see what all the fuss has been about.

I am on my way to the airport on day 90, it is 4.30 am. So I will hold off on my final comments to a later day when I can really stop and take in what achieving PCP day 90 really means.

Suffice to say that I am proud of having made it, I am delighted by the changes I have seen in my myself (inside and out) and I am really impressed by you all.  Many of you have made a real commitment and I am thrilled to see that you have got the changes you were looking for.  Welll done!!!

Back pain. Grrrrrrrrrr

Only managed 3/4 of my workout yesterday as I hurt my back!!!!

Irritating that five days out I should get this.

I was working out in the cold at Lake Taupo in central north island NZ. Skipping away and then a slow dawning that my back was feeling stiff then sore then pain.  Have spent most of yesterday hobbling around like a 70 year old man.. Sadly not peak condition.

Took today off and will try the exercises, sans skipping tomorrow.

Generally an impressive program outcome.. Just sorry I couldn't have ended in super fitness not in recover mode.

I was so smug too. No injuries all program and also no colds. Got a cold but fought it off in two days. Cool recovery.

Day something or other

Split my workout yesterday for the first time. Skipping and abs in the morning and then hit the gym in the afternoon for the other exercises pls a second shot at abs. Was easy and helped me get to work at a reasonable hour.

Have been getting to bed pretty early these last few days. Also hoping that I. Can ward of what feels like my first PCP cold. Stay away cold, stay away.

Interestingly the day after all this ends I go on a two week business's trip  through Asia.  Tough on the family, but at least I will be eatng more normally and don,t have to go through the egg hunting (and I don't mean the chocolate kind) exercises in hotels.

Last 10

Finding it hard to stay focused. Got to admit that the exercises are taking forever and while the diet is fine I dofeel the call for certain things......a muffin, wine etc.

Am keen to finish strong however so. Will just have to grind it out!

March 30, 2012 9:05 AM UTC

Gym thoughts...

My indulgence was a dinner out with my work colleagues.  I had some very impressive food, vension with all sorts of complicated additions, and a chocolate pave for dessert.  Topped off with a few glasses of wine.  It was very tasty but by the time I got home (all of 10.30pm I was feeling twitching and uncomfortable.  The extra sugar kept me up and the next day was a real drag.  I was no doubt hungover but worse then that I felt unpleasant and had a tough time concentrating throughout the day.   Not the mention a feeling of jumpiness most of the day.  So all in all, once again the indulgence serves to make a pretty obvious point about overly complicated food and too much wine.

I was starting to feel as though I am drifting a little.  I am judging my food rather than weighing it.  I am occasionaly finding that I am not having an element of my diet (like minimal veges, or yoghurt rather than fruit).  Not because I don't want to, usually because I haven't gotten myself organised in time to provide 100% adherence.  I think I am still running at about 95% (says I cracking open an egg white).

I am still doing the exercise but the last few days I am cutting some corners on teh abs workouts.  Partly because they are tough (particulalry the planks) but mainly because the workout takes so long now and I run out of time.

So the video reminder about finishing strong was very timely.  I liked the point that you remember things based on how you end them.  I have made amazing progress throughout the 75 days, both in diet change, alcohol change, mental discipline and exercise intensity.  It will be great to close out the 90 days knowing that I did it all, as I wanted to.

So I will redouble the discipline in the last 15 days and finish as we started.

Gym observations?

Usually at the gym there are lot of people on the treadmills (which I hate with a hateful loathing).  A lot of guys using freeweights (mainly biceps and chest).  Hardly anyone does leg exercises.  Noone skips.

The ab workout area is always busy but people don't spend very long there.

There are a category of huge guys, fit guys and guys who just seem to go to the gym but aren't really meant to be there (i.e. they don't look fit at all).  Women are mainly in the group workout rooms doing things that require coordination.

There aren't many people doing body weight based exercises.  Most people who are weight training aren't breathing very hard, nor sweating too much.  There is usually a couple of guys slying checking their abs out in the mirror (I mean, come on fellas, you look ridiculous).

Conclusions?
- People don't train with intensity...too long between breaks, too much watching TV etc
- People don't work their whole bodies...skinny legs, no backwork.
- Related to the point above, there is a lot of exercise being done for vanity rather than health or for functionality
- There is little attention to diet in my gym trainer interactions....which is really quite crazy when you think about it.
- I am not sure that people really train with intent.

Just having my second egg.  Getting sick of those.  My wife is going to kill me if she finds any more pieces of egg shell around.

day 70

Today I did exercise for day 69 rather than day 70.  I missed 69 yesterday, so....

Exercise felt really good today.  Did some sprints in between sets (really?  Yes. really)

Diet is boring me though.  While it is very satisfying knowing that I am displaying good discipline, I am really looking forward to relaxing over a couple of beers or glasses of wine in the future.

All rolling on.

Back to the blog

Hi all,
Have been quite slack on the blog. To be honest, while I have been sticking to the plan, and I am still interested in all things PCP, I am finding that I don't have a lot to say.

So I thought I would lead this return to blogging with some 3/4 complete observations.
1. I am down two belt holes on my belt
2.  My pants (on all my suits etc) are very baggy and need to be pulled in.
3. Waist is down from 95cm to 87cm.
4. Pull ups are now easy to do.
5.  90 second planks are hard to do but I can get 3 x 60 sec planks out.  Whereas when I started 20 secs were a real victory.
6.  I really enjoy my veges now.  For the first time....ever.
7.  (Its not just on the outside) I did my bloods back in October.  I re did them for a work health program and my blood glucose was down from 5.7 (slightly over) down to 4.8 (well within the acceptabel range).  My cholestrol was slightly outside the normal range.  Now it is well within and I am told it will continue to trend down.  All quit dramatic!!
8. Skipping is easy and I can do it FAST
9.  I have lost a lot of fat across my upper body.
10.  Lots more definition across the rest of my upper body.
11.  Skin looks clearer.

I have had a couple of days with the odd glass of wine (there is always a very compelling reason...apparently).  However, I have been strong on a number of other set peice dinners.  In the face of a lot of hasseling

I have found that changes have slowed down but I do feel like I have settled into a whole new pattern of eating and exercise.  So more power to me  and to PCP!!!!

Will post later tonight

In Sydney

In Sydney fro a week of meetings.  Exercise and diet are still roughly on track.  I will write more later

March 9, 2012 7:07 AM UTC

Just another PCP day

Found that I couldn't quite muster the motivation to do my workout this morning.  I got up at 5.45 as usual.  Got dressed.  Accidentially sat on the couch and then.... took my shoes off and bailed.

But it was OK.  I worked out in the afternoon at the gym.

Diet all fine.  Went to a restuarant with my family this evening.  That really is dull, without wine or tasty food.  Instead i ended up picking some vegetables from the side menu.  Was quite tasty and filling.

No other great observations.  Am quite tired.   Am planning my indulgence tomorrow with a BBQ at friends!

March 5, 2012 3:44 AM UTC

Day 51?

I had a day off work the other day and I treated myself to a deep tissue massage.  Was very nice on the PCP battered muscles.

I am delighted to see that we are taking the focus off legs.  I never enjoyed those exercises, though I have to admit that I can see some real difference in leg muscle, and my balance and general agility is greatly improved as a result.

Trousers still baggy.  Weight about 81kg (down 5kg from start).

I really enjoy the new timed skips.  Much nicer than counting.

I have our neighbourhood cat join me for my workouts each morning at 5.45am.  He/She likes to sit and watch me skip.  I am sure he is thinking dark thoughts about catching my rope and dragging it into the bushes.

Food is tough at the moment.  A lot of it and it seems kind of boring.  the dinner is boring me to tears.  Eggs whites and apple aint no way to live!

I had some interesting (?) mood swings the other day.  My wife rolled with them quite nicely but I caught myself feeling unaccountably snippy.  They seem to have faded.

Found the water message very comforting.  I have lived with a water guilt for some years, but now no longer!!

February 29, 2012 8:45 PM UTC

Over hald way and trudging onward

I have definitely found the workouts harder.  The 4 x 15 pushups has marked the high tide mark of my resistence to the 'easy' workout option  (i.e. hello knees at number 8 on the 3rd set). On the positive side I at least know that I am hitting  failure.

The diet has been fine.  Though I have had a couple of work dinners which mean that I take a fish/veg option rather than the actual diet of an apple and two egg whites.

I am feeling like I am physically plateuing (sp?) as well.  I do have baggy trouser syndrome but am still carrying some around my middle, though that is fading.

This morning it was raining so I chickened out of my work out and intend to do it at the gym later today.  This will be a first for me, so I am interested in seeing how that goes.  I did find that my morning was a slow start at the office, without my early morning workout endorphin rush.

I think I will try 8 minute abs tomorrow.  Could be the day!

February 25, 2012 8:21 AM UTC

Approaching half way.

Back on track.  Keeping to diet and exercise.

The exercsie is taking me about an hour.  Quite a while.  However, I have been doing the max reps.

My trousers are much bagger aroudn the waist.  My suits are starting to be a bit loose.

February 20, 2012 8:42 AM UTC

PCP interupted.

Had a very tough week at a work conference with an unforseen emergency knocking me off my diet and three nights of booze.

I have also not been able to follow the new limited dinner diet.  I am now back on it though and had my first limited dinner.

A rough blow to the PCP plan but I am keen to get back on it and now that things have returned to normal I am back on it with a gusto.

February 13, 2012 8:14 PM UTC

At a sales conference

Hi,

This will be short.

Am at our annual sales conference, which is all about long days (i..e tricky to fit the workout in), long dinners (I am afraid the arrival of the fruit dinner has come at a bad time) and booze (lots of drinks and not much sleep).  So a PCP killer, in short.

I have managed to maintain the exercise.  Doing it in my room, overlooking the Gold Coast Beach (Australia).  It is hard stuff but still achievable.

The food is tricker.  Breakfast is all fine, Lunch has been harder to nail and for dinner I have had to resort to some earlier PCP principle and eat fish and veges.  Can't pull off the evening veg snack either.  I am going to go find some fruit today between breaks so that I have do my snack.  I will also grab some milk for my hotel fridge.

I will keep you posted but it is proving tough to do.

on the upside, I caved last night and thought 'OK, I will have a glass of wine'.  But my body didn't let my mind carry that out.  The wine tasted horrible, I had two sips and that was it.  Then I thought I would have a beer.  Same story...one sip and 'no thank you'.  Ha ha brain.  Body 1 - Weak backsliding brain 0!

February 10, 2012 6:46 AM UTC

Lunch is hard

Lunch is proving hard to keep on track.  Have had a couple of days when I have missed lunch altogether.  Believe it or not, I just forget!  Busy work week.

The new exercises are hard but they are doable.  The leaping is rough.

Had a glass and a half of wine with my wife as my indulgence.  It tasted terrible at first, now I have a headache and feel foggy.    I also feel consumed by indulgence guilt. I am tired now as well.   So on the whole I didn't enjoy it.

Did some travel earlier this week, so I missed one day of exercises and had to cobble together my breakfast (got it all except for the veg), lunch, got it all and dinner, acheived as well.

Am finding that I can handle work stressors better on the PCP diet. Am more motivated to tackle them head on and get them out of the way rather than dragging my heels due to lack of energy.

Was 82.1kg the other day. Down 2.4kg since I started.  Have definetly lost a lot of flab though.

Dull post.

Found i might have a sneaking interest in cauliflower.  Crazy news.

February 5, 2012 7:56 AM UTC

Weight.

83.4kg BTW.  My scales now say 19.3% body fat.  That seems like a inconsistent measure.  I was 13% a few weeks ago.  I do't think I put on that much fat!!!  Ha.  Silly scales.

February 5, 2012 7:18 AM UTC

Start of Week 4

Had a look a the new exercises.  Am not looking forward to the Creeps!

Went to Sydney for a work function on Friday.  It was hard to follow the diet but I managed in the main.  Dinner was probably ot exact but it will do.  I had a glass of wine, which wasn't good but was part of the plan. NOrmally at this type of function I would probably have 5 -6 booze drinks, so I figured that as it was a special occasion I would concede one.  It tasted fine but I didn't pine for more.

I couldn't get any protein for breakfast, my hotel just did a line of sausages and bacon.

I did my exercises this morning in the Royal Botanical gardens.  Very pretty.

February 1, 2012 9:18 AM UTC

38 minutes

I noticed that some people were timing their exercise and that someone had beate 30 minutes.  So this morning I timed myself to see if I could crack the half hour.  Sadly no.

38minutes.  I am sure that I can beat that.

Diet is alright.  Sometimes it feels bland, sometimes I feel like I am pulling off some nice meals (so nice I wonder if I am doign something wrong).  Had some steak, mashed sweet potato, corn and mashed potato today for dinner.  Some home made fried rice for lunch and the ever present fruit salad.

Bought a new set of scales yesterday as the cheap one I purchased at the start of the program was giving me variations of 1.1kg in one session.  The new ones report that I am at 83.5kg.  This appears to be up on the other week but still a kg less the at the start of the program.

Am defiitely WAY more alert and sharper at work.  Am also more energetic and organised at home.  The difference is quite marked.  I find that I am all over things which is very satisfying. And while I don't want to over-claim it also feels like my memory is better (less walking into a room and wondering why I was going in there, less forgetting to complete something, quicker recall on numbers and dates ....that sort of thing).   If this keeps up I will probably be able to move objects with my mind by day 90!

January 29, 2012 7:51 PM UTC

Day 16

Exercises are going fine at the moment.  Still doing the maximum reps.  I am afraid that if I do anything less than the maximum that I will allow myself to deliberatly cut the last few reps, just when it starts to really matter.

Have found myself regularly checking the site to see the new diet.  But the technical problems persist.  Tough stuff as we need to do shopping and it is good to know the volumes.  Being in Auckland adds and extra complication as we are well ahead of everyone on the international timezone.

Food is going OK.  It is starting to get a bit boring.  However, I am becoming more interested in cooking (which my wife is happy about).  We were in a kitchenware shop the other day and I became captivated by a demonstration video of how to cut vegetables. It was really interesting!  Really!

Going shopping today for food.  Might also buy a vegetable steamer.  I had better sign off before this becomes more dull.

January 28, 2012 6:49 AM UTC

Check this... Purple Cauliflower!

Found these today at a fruit and veg shop in downtown Auckland.  The second picture has a description.

Jeans, Lemon, Lime and Jumps

Jeans feel looser.  In fact last week I also downshifted a belt notch on my work belt.

Just had some chicken schnitzel, made at home so compliant.  Some pasta, beans, roast pumpkin and potato.  Tasty, and I added some lemon juice and pepper to add some zing.

Lemon and Lime.  Loving them both.  Handy for drinks (lime) and for a bit of flavour on chicken etc (lemon).

Found the skipping a bit of an anticlimax today.  Was kind of zoning out and found that I had lost count a couple of times.  I couldn't have been more than 10 or 20 out at the end.  So I thought I would round it out by going to 850 to make sure that I got my 800.  Then I thought...'Hmmm, 900 would be good for boasting to my wife' (who was still in bed asleep). And then I thought 'gosh, it would be a pity not to do 1000, I am so close'  So somehow I found myself doing an extra 200!!  Bloody PCP and its legions of vegetables.  Self adminstered jumps.  Who'd have thought!

January 27, 2012 2:24 AM UTC

Still all right...

Ok.

Exercise is going well.  Am still managing to hit the maximum reps per set.  Not enjoying the lunges or the squats and can only just get the max pushup out while still doing the pushups properly (i.e. no knees).  Skipping is fine but it has already begun to bore me a little.  Always hard to start first thing.

Food is OK.  I have taken to planning out all my meals with my wife for the week ahead.  This makes a nice little grid of meals that I can follow.I do feel like I am spending a lot of time in the kitchen, specifically washing up.

I presume that will get better.

I will find some of the receipes and put them up on the Q&A.  I remember I owe a few people some.

Most outside (non-PCP) people seem interested when I tell them about this program.  None have actually expressed a desire to do it, so I am still feeling a little like a cult member.

Interesting to note that I am more alert at work and at home.  I feel sharper and can concentrate for longer without needing breaks.  Am becoming quite organised at work as well so this is starting to pay off for me.  Physically, I feel like I have lost some bits of flab but nothing crazy.

All going well.

Lots of food, lots of time invested

Hi,

The food preparation is a real time drain, I am working to batch things up and prepare multiple meals in advance. I am sure this will get better but it is not helped by my elementary cooking skills. Thanks God for advice and patient direction from my wife.

Breakfast is the biggest struggle.  I think I am going to have to find some speedier options (hardboiled eggs for instance).  I am also keen to become a friend of the spice/herbs to keep the blandness down.

Exercise this morning was tougher.  I am feeling  a little sort in the legs but from past experience that will go soon.

I do feel more alert and have certainly been sleeping better.  The no booze helps.

I have developed a deep relationship with blueberries.  I feel that they have been missing from life for too long.

If people are interested in recipe exchange I have a nice lemon chilli chicken pasta and a tuna pasta to offer.

Cheers

Day 8 - And now it feels like a program!

So we got some diets, some harder work outs and a bunch of new features on our website.  All delivered with a freindly video from our Dear Leader (it does feel a little like an international cult receiving videos from Patrick with our instructions....love it).

The exercises were tougher today.  Still managed to get through them at the maximum reps (though really had to work on that last push up).  I have also had to find a bar at the school behind my house to do the incline things, so my PCP is getting me out into the community!

The diet was interesting.  The breakfast was big, lunch was also bigger than normal and dinner was fine.  I quiet like my fruit snacks.

Breakfast
Scrambled eggs, with three toast and a tomato.  A glass of milk and a half a chicken breast.  Seemed a bit random.  I am sure I will refine this in the future.  Have big plans for Mr Omelette tomorrow!

Lunch was a pita bread chicken salad style.

Dinner was lemon chicken, chilli pasta.  With a side of carrot and asparagus.

With some advice from past PCPers I have done a bit of food prep for the week.
- Made up some fruit salad (three serves of double snack allocation for the week ahead, morning and afternoon tea)
- Prepared for my omelette by chopping up some tomato, onion and grated zuichini (or corgette, depending on where you are)
- Planned out the dinners for the week, incorporating some new options with some alterations to existing meals to make them PCP compliant.

So onward and upward!!!

January 20, 2012 7:02 AM UTC

Day 6 - Reflectionville: Population 1

It has been an interesting first week.  I am not doing PCP to necessarily lose weight.

I started at about 84.5kg and I am already down to 82.9kg at last measure.  However, weight loss hasn't hasn't been my goal. My PCP motivatino comes from a desire to see if  eating right, drinking less and exercising according to a regular plan can improve some other measures; namely alertness, energy levels, flexibility, stress levels, posture and general 'live-longerness'.    And specifically whether it will instill a new long term set of habits around the usual i.e.  eating better and drinking less.

So, at Day 6, a couple of observations about the half diet thing...

- I am much more aware of what I eat.  Having to think about only having half seems to make you consider your food more carefully.

- I am hunger most of the time.

- However, I am not hunger abotu 20 minutes after eating my half serve...perhaps I don't need all the food that I used to think I did.

- I am not so interested in a cleansing ale after work as I used to be.

- I used to eat a lot of snacks or tid bits from the fridge.

- I do seem to shed weight pretty quickly (well it feels that way to me).  This is sort of intersting but also knid of alarming as I have never regarded myself as overweight in any wya.

- The exercises are fine. I think I quite like skipping....is that wrong?  Feels awkard to admit.

January 17, 2012 8:40 AM UTC

Day 3

Probably ate a little more at dinner than I should have but it is still possible that it was only a half serve.  Also, it was a Tuna pasta so I am tell myself it wasn't unhealthy.

The rest of the eating was according to instructions.  Half my normal breakfast, three measely pieces of sushi for lunch.  No tasty snacks.

Exercise was fine.

Felt a bit blah this afternoon.  Feel better having eaten.

January 16, 2012 9:21 AM UTC

Day 2

This mornings workout was quite OK.  Disturbingly so.

I suspect  things will get tougher.  Skipping is still a bit of a coordination exercise (pun intended), but I am enjoying that part of it.

Diet today was 2 wheat bix, half a museli bar for morning tea, lunch was a bulky 3 pieces of sushi, arvo tea was a puritan half an apple  and dinner was a half serve of sausages and salad.  I have spent most of the day hungry.

However, I am feeling alert and interested in the project.  It has been interesting and nice saying hello to a few people on the blogs.  I am looking forward to 'meeting' more of you soon.

I did my workouts in my back yard at 6am.  Auckland at 6am is quite peaceful and it was particularly nice as we are blessed with a swimming pool.  Doing skipping and push-ups next to a pool feels quite decadent.

January 15, 2012 4:44 AM UTC

Day 1

Started today.

Have had the odd experience of eating a half serve of ice cream with my daughter today.  Am also staring down the barrel of an equally odd half a hamburger for dinner.

However, the exercises aren't appearing too tough at the moment.

Depressingly, I have scheduled the start of my PCP with the first day back at work (tomorrow).  A double wammy of will power required tomorrow.

Program looks fun.  I am looking forward to meeting fellow PCPers!!

Day -2

Waiting for the first batch of info from Team Patrick.  Not sure what it will entail.
