Tale of the tape

PCP has been a great experience for me.  Not only have I lost weight and gained muscle but I have learned what it takes to get my body into peak condition.  At 97kg I am obviously not in peak condition but I am on my way.  I have more energy and feel amazingly healthy.  I used to suffer terrible heartburn that would make me think I was having a heart attack.  Now that I am eating a healthy diet (that I cook myself) I am heartburn free.

In this post I included a side by side comparison of my belts worn before PCP and now.  I was at the 2nd to last notch on the long belt and am now on the 3rd notch of the short belt, 10 cm around my waist just gone!  The posts that Patrick sent us on ignorance in choice really hit home for me.  Now I have the knowledge and it clarifies the consequences of my food and exercise decisions each and every day.

I am excited about my success in the PCP program and look forward to healthy life going forward.  Thank you Patrick, Sarah and team.

Day 82

I had my annual health check the other day and I am very pleased with the results.  No surprise the doctor was happy to see that I am losing weight but on top of that my cholesterol is down 15% and kidney functions improved.  My lung capacity is up too.  The results help me understand that cooking your own food as much as possible is a necessity for healthy living.

Day 75

The workouts are intense and I am as sore as can be.  I am enjoying having a real dinner and ready for life after PCP.  I don't think I can go back to my old eating habits and am excited to keep losing weight until I hit my goal of 80 kg (now at 98).  I am very happy I am participating in the program even though I am not too excited about my pictures on the net.

Day 70

Working hard on getting all the exercises in but time constraints are making it difficult.  I'll post more soon.

Day 61

I had lunch with a friend I haven't seen since before the program started and when we met he said, "Where did you leave the rest of you?".  That was a great feeling.  My pants are almost falling off and I am down 3 belt notches (actually onto a smaller belt).  Progress has slowed but I am very happy to be where I am, just looking forward to where I know I can be if I keep it up.

I'm pretty sure I will be on a PCP like diet until I am down around 80 kg (now at 99kg).  That will definitely take longer than 30 days.

Day 56

The increased intensity of exercise is taking its toll.  I am feeling sore for longer periods and feeling hungry during the day.  I am down into double digits on the kg scale and looking forward to going down even more.

Day 52

Today was 七五三 (7-5-3) for my oldest and a great day to use my indulgence.  We had sushi before heading out to the temple with my 3 year old in a kimono.  I have felt like I am on the outside of the family at lunch and dinner with my "special" meals so it was nice to participate again.  For this to really stick and for me to keep losing weight after PCP 90 days is up I will need to convert my wife to the plan.

Day 50

This is the first time ever I have been able to stick to a portion control diet plan and not feel compelled to cheat.  The smaller meals and more of them is great, advice I have read before but never dedicated any effort to trying, so I feel great about the program.  I have been sick for the last week so not loving life right now but excited about the change I have been able to make in my life, thank you Patrick and Sarah.

I have to say that at this point I am starting to think about life after PCP.  What is the optimal portion size for me to continue weight loss (still another 30kg to get back to high school weight) and maintain a healthy lifestyle?  I hope I can find it in the next 40 days.

Day 42

Burning the candles at both ends and now sick as a dog.  Easy to stick to the diet but no exercise.  Looking forward to a recovery by tomorrow.

Day 39

Had a visit from my parents.  Off work but working hard.  Had a tough time getting exercise in with all the trips to Disneyland and other parks for my little ones to play with grandma but it balanced out.  I am still losing weight and was able to stick to the program for food (more or less).  Everyone is back home and I'm ready to push forward.  I'm close to double digit weight at 101 kg and like the diet very much.  I am no longer hungry in the evenings even though we are on very restricted dinners.

Day 27

I really enjoy this program!  The structured approach is making it very easy for me to make healthy eating decisions.  I have always been an active person and tried to lose weight in the past by burning more calories but I was just eating too much.  I am getting used to the portion sizes although I understand further restrictions are on the way.  I have a 5km charity event coming up so I will add 5km runs to my exercise routine a few times a week to get the rhythm back.

My face and belly are starting to reflect my weight loss but as others have pointed out the number isn't all that important.  I have a milestone at 100 kg that I am on track to hit in 2 weeks.  After that I will be more interested in turning my spare tire belly into a washboard.

Day 20

Starting weight: 109.5kg
Current weight: 104kg

A lot of things are coming together for the weight to come off.  I have double digit weight in my sights!  Lately I have been eating my afternoon snack around 5 ~ 6 pm with dinner at around 8pm to limit my hunger on the way home from work.  A little fruit goes a long way towards fighting off the desire to stop for a tokumori curry rice with fried chicken.

The exercises are feeling good too.  I was back to jumping rope for a few days but decided to switch to walking and a few visits to the chiropractor until my back is in better shape.  I did 850 jumps a few days ago and it was tough, not so much because of back but because it is damn hard.  The chiropractor burst out laughing when I told her that I hurt my back jump roping, the fat aging man in front of her did not match with her image of the activity for some reason ;-)

Day 16

Starting weight: 109.5kg
Current weight: 105.5kg

I am struggling with diet after work.  So incredibly hungry.  This is the point where I usually get into trouble trying to lose weight.  I have a little success and then I use that as an excuse to celebrate with food.  Let's hope this time is different.  Seeing so many other people who finished the program looking great helps keep me on track.  The program works, I've seen it, now it's my turn.

September 27, 2011 2:37 PM BST

I'm back baby!

Ok, so I've been out of the blog for a week with technical challenges but now I'm back!  I have lost 3.5 kg so far and not feeling all that hungry during the day.  My biggest challenge is dinner.  At work all day I am distracted and can easily fight the urge to snack.  Leaving the office and heading home my eyes hungrily stare at any shop were I used to stop for onigiri, curry rice, and other highly caloric bread concoctions.  Having pre-cooked my lunch and dinner for the week helps me get food in my stomach within minutes of getting home, so far so good.

I am starting to struggle on the workouts.  I did something awful to my back jumping rope and haven't been able to complete a session for 4 days.  I am doing all the other workouts and still struggling to do it at the same time everyday.

Getting used to PCP Life

I am getting used to the pace of the program and I feel great.  I was surprised to find that I have enough coordination to jump rope again, day 1 heckling by my wife was a great motivator, and I haven't done push ups in a few years.  I jumped on the scale on day 2 only to realize that I gained 1.5 kg in my "farewell to fried food" pre-PCP campaign.  The 1st week is going very well but the kids and work make the "same time, same place, everyday" impossible.  My little munchins love my PCP workout gear and now we have 3 jump ropes!
